The Iditarod Sled Dog Race
We are more than just a sled dog tour kennel—we are a professional racing kennel with a strong focus on the legendary Iditarod, a challenging 1,000-mile dog sled race. An Iditarod team consists of 16 highly trained dogs and one skilled musher. Travis has competed in the Iditarod eleven times, with an impressive top finish of 5th place, while Sarah has raced in two Iditarods, earning a best finish of 34th. In 2026, Travis will take on his 12th Iditarod, continuing to push the limits of endurance and excellence in the world of mushing.

Our Dogs
Our At Turning Heads Kennel, our dogs are the heart and soul of everything we do. We take immense pride in our fun, friendly, and incredibly energetic sled dogs, from our leading lady, Queen, and her partner Ohmer, to our powerhouse big wheel dogs, Tug and Naru. Every day with them is an adventure. Our commitment to exceptional dog care has earned us top honors in the sport, with multiple “Best Dog Care” awards from the Tustumena 200, Copper Basin 300, and Knik 200 races.
We believe in a hands-on approach to dog sledding, ensuring each dog gets the attention, training, and love they deserve. Our dedication to the sport and our dogs has been recognized in various ways. In 2021, Travis received the Sportsmanship Award from the Willow 300, and in 2022, we were honored with both a Best Dog Care award from the Knik 200 and the Sportsmanship Award from the Iditarod. In 2023, Travis again earned the Sportsmanship Award from the Willow 300. We believe that quality dog care and helping others are far more important than race results, though those results are a testament to our hard work.
In 2024, Travis led the Iditarod for the middle 300 miles of the race, won the prestigious First Fish Award, and finished an impressive 6th place. In 2025, Travis again finished 6th in the Iditarod — and trail changes made it the longest race ever. We are excited to build on this momentum as we look ahead to 2026 and the opportunity for even greater success.
Beyond Travis, we proudly support a number of other talented mushers, including Iditarod rookies like Severin Cathry (2024) and Ebbe Pedersen (2025), both of whom raced with our kennel. We’re excited to help all mushers reach their goals.
